34. If you’re laughing away every day, there’s more going on than meets the eye.

Even after watching The Wizard of Oz countless times, I’m not quite sure what to make of the citizens of Emerald City. They profess to be a carefree lot—waking at noon, starting work at one, and knocking off an hour later—but why are they trying so hard to convince us how happy they are? And what are they doing with all those idle hours? Slipping out to cultivate the poppy fields?

All that good cheer certainly rests on a shaky foundation. When the Wicked Witch of the West starts skywriting, residents jettison their jolliness and swarm the gates to the Wizard’s palace, clamoring for explanations and reassurance. They’re turned away by that familiar-looking guard. “Nobody can see the Great Oz, not nobody, not nohow!”

Residence in Emerald City suddenly loses its luster. All that cheeriness starts to look like whistling in the dark. Once again, things are not always what they appear to be. And when they look too good to be true, they probably are.
